Gateway Piano Studio was opened in 1993 with the sole purpose of providing quality classical instruction for pianists of all ages and levels.

Studio Director, Carol Fifield, feels that students do their best when they set goals. Gateway Piano Studio provides many avenues for this and a curriculum is created for each student which takes into consideration individual aspirations and level of commitment.

Mrs. Fifield endorses and encourages students to participate in the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program. She is an RCM Certified teacher and has been using this program in her studio since 2008.

Mrs. Fifield is a member of MTNANCMTAGMTANC Federation of Music Clubs, and the National Federation of Music Clubs. She has been a member of MTNA and NCMTA since 1990. MTNA Student Competitions, NCMTA District and State Piano Contest-Festivals and the GMTA Solo and Ensemble Festival are just some of the opportunities for evaluation which are offered through these organizations. Mrs. Fifield’s students have received highest ratings at all levels of these contests: Junior A, Junior B, Senior A, Senior B and have placed in the MTNA Senior Performance Piano Competitions.

There is at least one studio recital held each year in Greensboro.

Upper level Advanced students may participate in state and regional competitions such as the MTNA Competitions, East Carolina Piano CompetitionPeter Perret Youth Talent SearchThe Greensboro Youth Symphony Concerto Competition, to name a few. Mrs. Fifield’s students have won such competitions as the Gardener-Webb Concerto Competition, the East Carolina Piano Competition, GYC Artistry Awards,  Meredith College Chopin Competition,  and the Piano and Organ Distributors Scholarship. Her students have also placed in such competitions as The Peter Perret Youth Talent Search, the Greensboro Youth Symphony Concerto Competition and the Gustavo Romero Piano Competition. Advanced students regularly perform at retirement homes in the community.

Congratulations to Allen Xu who is the 2026 winner of the GTSO Concerto Competition, which was held on Saturday February 14, 2026, at the West Village Concert Hall on the campus of Georgia Tech University.

 Allen will be performing the entire Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 1 by Sergei Rachmaninoff on April 12, 2027, with the Georgia Tech Symphony Orchestra at the Ferst Center for the Arts on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. Congratulations to RCM Gold Medal Winners Allen Xu and Bridgette Yang.

2023 Royal Conservatory of Music Celebration of Excellence for the Southeast Region (AL, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA) held Sunday March 10, 2024, at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL which honored the students who received the highest grades in the region.

These students of Carol Fifield were given the designation of Gold Medalists. Allen Xu received a Gold Medal at Level 10. Bridgette Yang received a Gold Medal at Level 5.

Congratulations to Allen Xu, who was awarded First Honorable Mention at the finals of the Peter Perret Youth Talent Search Competition: Senior Level held on January 20, 2024.
